Questions to Ask Before a Long-Distance Move
Get straightforward answers about long-distance moving costs, interstate estimates, delivery timing, packing, storage and protecting your belongings.
How much do long-distance movers cost?
There is no single flat price for every long-distance move. Your cost depends on the size of your shipment, the distance between pickup and delivery, the services you request and the conditions at both locations.
Packing, storage, stairs, elevators, long carries, specialty items and other services can also affect the total. The best way to understand what your move will cost is to get a written moving estimate based on the actual details of your shipment.
What is considered an interstate move?
An interstate move is a household move in which your belongings are transported from one state to another. For example, moving from Texas to Florida is an interstate move.
Interstate household-goods moves are subject to federal requirements. A move can also be long-distance without crossing a state line, so “long-distance” and “interstate” do not always mean exactly the same thing.
How far in advance should I book long-distance movers?
A practical target is to start planning your long-distance move about six to eight weeks before your preferred move date.
Starting earlier is a good idea if you are moving during the summer, at the end of the month, on a weekend, from a larger home or on a schedule with limited flexibility. If your move is coming up sooner, it is still worth checking availability rather than assuming it is too late.
How long does a long-distance move take?
Long-distance delivery time depends on your route, shipment size, pickup schedule, destination and the transportation plan for your move.
A move to a neighboring state may have a different timeline from a cross-country shipment. Weather, road conditions and other operational factors can also affect timing. Before booking, ask for the pickup and delivery window that applies to your specific shipment.
How is a long-distance moving estimate calculated?
A useful moving estimate starts with an accurate picture of what you are moving and the services you need.
Be prepared to provide your origin and destination, move dates, household inventory and information about stairs, elevators, parking, long carries, packing, storage and any items that may require special handling.
For an interstate household-goods move, review the written estimate carefully and make sure the items and services you discussed are included.
What is the difference between a binding and non-binding moving estimate?
A binding estimate sets the amount you are expected to pay for the shipment and services listed in that written estimate. If you add items or request additional services before loading, the estimate may need to be revised.
A non-binding estimate is an approximation rather than a guaranteed final price. Final charges are determined according to the shipment, services provided and the mover's applicable tariff.
For interstate moves, federal rules also limit how much a mover may require at delivery under a non-binding estimate. Always confirm which type of estimate you are receiving before you book.
Can my moving price change after I receive an estimate?
It can, depending on the type of estimate and whether the details of your move change.
Adding furniture, boxes, packing, storage or other services can affect the price. Access conditions that were not included in the original estimate may also matter.
If something changes before moving day, tell your mover as soon as possible and ask for any revised services or charges to be documented in writing.
Do long-distance movers pack for you?
Yes. Professional packing can be added to many long-distance moves.
Southwest Van Lines offers packing options for customers who want help preparing household goods for transportation. Depending on your move, you may need help with the entire home or only certain rooms, fragile items or items that require additional preparation.
Tell us what you want packed when requesting your estimate so the service can be included in your moving plan.
Can I use storage during a long-distance move?
Storage can be useful when your new home is not ready, your closing dates do not line up or you need more time between pickup and delivery.
Southwest Van Lines can discuss storage options based on your route, timing and shipment requirements. Because availability and charges vary by move, mention your storage needs when requesting your estimate rather than waiting until moving day.
What protection do I have if my belongings are lost or damaged during an interstate move?
Interstate movers must offer two levels of mover liability: Full Value Protection and Released Value.
Under Released Value, the mover's liability is limited to 60 cents per pound per article. Full Value Protection provides a higher level of mover responsibility for lost or damaged items, subject to its terms.
These valuation options are not the same as a separate third-party moving insurance policy. Review your protection options before signing your moving documents.
How do I know if an interstate moving company is legitimate?
Before booking an interstate move, verify the company with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and confirm that its name, U.S. DOT number and operating authority match the company you are hiring.
You should also review your written estimate, confirm whether you are dealing with a mover or a broker and avoid signing blank or incomplete moving documents.
Southwest Van Lines LLC is listed by FMCSA as an active household-goods carrier under USDOT 4142008 and MC 1588300.
What is the difference between a moving company and a moving broker?
A moving carrier is the company authorized to transport household goods. A moving broker arranges transportation with a carrier rather than transporting the shipment itself.
Both interstate movers and brokers have federal requirements, but they perform different roles. Before booking, confirm which type of company you are working with and which carrier will be responsible for transporting your household goods.
FMCSA currently lists Southwest Van Lines LLC as a carrier authorized for household goods.
